13% of Colombians are afflicted with cardiovascular diseases – one of the highest rates in South America.

1% of all children born in Colombia have cardiovascular diseases, approximately 9,700 new cases each year. Most of these babies are born into poor families with no medical insurance.

30% of these children reside in rural areas where there is virtually no access to medical care.

It is estimated that every year 4,500 children with cardiac problems receive no care.

The lack of access to health services has worsened over the past few years due in large part as a result of Colombia’s economic problems and political violence,. These conditions have caused widespread displacement of families from rural to urban areas, increasing unemployment, poverty and unhealthy living conditions. These factors are major causes in the occurrence of congenital cardiac problems, with their consequent late diagnosis and resulting complications including death.
